Based off Hawaiian shaved ice, The Get Shaved Truck, has brought the “ice cream truck” to a gourmet level. With a fusion of homemade syrup made from pure cane sugar combined with a multitude of delectable add ons, this is not your average shaved ice. Choose a scoop of 3 ice creams, throw on some sweet red bean past and indulge in the light, fluffy ice.

For those distrusting of themselves, choose from the trucks most popular menu items:

-Monkey Brains: Strawberry and Banana Shaved Ice over Vanilla Ice Cream and topped with Sweetened Condensed Milk
-Root Beer Dream: Root Beer Shaved Ice over Vanilla Ice Cream and topped with Sweetened Condensed Milk -Rockin’ Rainbow: Cherry, Blue Raspberry, Pineapple Shaved Ice over Vanilla Ice Cream.

Get Shaved is also opening brick and mortar shop in early May at 9255 Reseda Blvd. Next to Falafel Palace in Northridge.

Check out their website for locations or Twitter. You’ll often find them following Kogi BBQ.

Cocoa Mulch Harmful to Pets

Warning for Pet Owners!cocoa mulch

By: Serena Scott Thomas

Share/Bookmark

Over the weekend, the doting owner of two young lab mixes purchased
Cocoa Mulch from Target to use in their garden. The dogs loved the way it
smelled and it was advertised to keep cats away from their garden. Their
dog (Calypso) decided the mulch smelled good enough to eat and devoured
a large helping. She vomited a few times which was typical when she
eats something new but wasn’t acting lethargic in any way. The  next day,
Mom woke up and took Calypso out for her morning  walk . Half way through
the walk, she had a seizure and died instantly.

Although the mulch had NO warnings printed on the label, upon further
investigation on the company’s web site said, this product is HIGHLY toxic to dogs and  cats.

Cocoa Mulch is manufactured by Hershey’s, and they claim that “It is true
that studies have shown that 50% of the dogs that eat Cocoa Mulch can
suffer physical harm to a variety of degrees (depending on each individual
dog). However, 98% of all dogs won’t eat  it.”
*Snopes site gives information on Cocoa Mulch

Cocoa Mulch, which is sold by Home Depot, Foreman’s Garden Supply and
other Garden supply stores contains a lethal ingredient called
‘Theobromine’. It is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells like chocolate and it
really attracts dogs. They will ingest this stuff and die. Several deaths
already occurred in the last 2-3  weeks.

Theobromine is in all chocolate, especially dark or baker’s chocolate
which is  toxic to dogs. Cocoa bean shells contain potentially toxic
quantities of theobromine,  a xanthine compound  similar in effects to
caffeine and theophylline.  A dog that ingested a lethal quantity of garden
mulch made from cacao bean shells developed severe convulsions and died 17
hours later. Analysis of the stomach contents and the ingested cacao
bean shells revealed the presence of lethal amounts of theobromine.

Malcolm McLaren

Tribute to McLaren and the Sex Pistols

When you think about the music business there are impresario’s behind the scenes who are as big and important maybe more important than the artists themselves.  That might be a bit of an exaggeration but to say Malcolm McLaren who died this week of cancer was a huge influence in the music business is not an overstatement.  McLaren was incredibly influential in putting together the Sex Pistols a game changer of a band if ever there was one and he was a big factor in their publicity, press, dress, so many of the factors that made the Sex Pistols the huge influence they were on Punk Rock.  Malcolm released an album in 1983 here in the US called Duck Rock that was a massively influential project as well in moving forward the burgeoning hip-hop, graffiti and rap scene.  His song Buffalo Gals was played on radio stations like KROQ here in Los Angeles and embraced by the dance and hip hop communities as well.  When you look at the video for Buffalo Gals you can see Malcolm shining a light on these new worlds of break dancing, graffiti art, scratching DJ music and rap vocal expression which would have impact for decades to come.  RIP Malcolm and Livestrong!

The Young Veins

Tipp’s Tip of the Week: The Young Veins

By: Steve Tipp

I know, I’m a name dropper.  It is another habit from my music days (like the sprinkling of four letter words) that I am still working on.  But in the old days you would drop one radio programmer’s name who liked the record I was working on and it would build interest from the next guy, “oh it’s doing well for them…”  In any event I digress.

So an awesome young client of mine Ryan Ross is one of the former founding members of Panic At The Disco.  I had an awesome time working with him because we listened and talked about a lot of great music in the process of finding him a Los Angeles home.  Ryan’s new band The Young Veins has released their first single and it is available to either stream or for free download at www.YoungVeins.com It’s got a strong 60’s garage rock sound with a lot of melody. Go get ‘em RyRo!

Preparing for Earthquakes

By: Karen Leeearthquake preparation

With the cluster of recent major earthquakes, from Haiti to Chile, to Baja California, we are reminded that we live in earthquake territory. We haven’t had a major earthquake in Southern California since January  of 1994, and perhaps have gotten quite lax in our preparedness.

With that said, here are some ways we can prepare for earthquakes:

- Water-suggested supply of 3 days for every person in household, along with canned food (make sure to check the dates on your old canned goods and restock).
- Batteries for a portable radio, propane stove/lamps or perhaps an emergency generator.
- Candles and flashlights.
- How about a cell phone charger for your car in case phones and power are out.
- Update your first aid kit.  Make sure you have an earthquake kit in your car with water and energy bars, along with walking shoes in case you have to leave your car.
- If you don’t have a gas shut off valve, tape a wrench to your gas valve and know how to turn it off in case of a leak. – And have an emergency plan that you discuss with your family-evacuation, meeting place, etc. Let’s hope we don’t need this but as the Boy Scouts say, “Be Prepared”.

A Few Tips for this Weeks Rain

Beware of burn areas as 2 major storms are on tap for Southern CaliforniaPicture 1

By: Roger Ewing

Share/Bookmark

This is a friendly reminder to pay special attention during this week.  2 major storms will hit, the first on Monday, December 7th and the second, more impressive storm, will begin late on Wednesday, December 9th. Forecasters predict the 2 storms will cause widespread power outages and flooding in burn areas.  Also, be sure to keep an eye on your home.  Beware of clogged rain gutters and leaky roofs.   It’s also a great time to shut the sprinklers off and save a few extra bucks on your next water bill.  Drive safe and have a good week.
